Abstract
There are several herbal poultice recipes for knee osteoarthritis. However, there has been no systematic
analysis of evidence. This survey research aimed to collect herbal poultice recipes for knee osteoarthritis used in all
health-care facilities in Health Region 3 during May–September 2017. Descriptive statistics used for data analysis
included frequencies and percentages of herbal uses, names, recipe formulation, components, properties, categories
and cautions. It was found that there were 24 herbal poultice recipes containing 67 herbs from 26 families; of all
recipes, 19 were hot poultice and five were cold poultice, each made of 3–20 herbs. For hot poultice recipes, ginger
was mostly used in 16 recipes, cassumunar ginger in 10 recipes, and kaffir lime in nine recipes. Dried herbs were
used more than fresh herbs. Main health properties of hot poultice were blood circulation improvement and pain
and inflammation reduction. For cold poultice recipes, green chiretta was mostly used in four recipes, while Tili-
acora, cassumunar ginger and turmeric were used in three recipes. Fresh herbs were used more than dried herbs.
Main health properties of cold poultice were inflammation, heat and pain reduction. Both hot and cold poultice
recipes should be cautiously used in patients with an open wound, a skin disease, or herbal or alcohol allergies.
