A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of Sahasatara
capsule and diclofenac tablet for the treatment of muscle pain. Subjects were males and females
aged 25-60 with muscle pain of the shoulder or neck who were outpatients at the Research Insti-
tute of Thai Traditional Medicine, Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alterna-
tive Medicine, Ministry of Public Health. Sixty-two subjects who met the inclusion and exclusion
criteria were equally randomized into two groups to receive one of the two following treatments:
Group 1, each subject was given one 400-mg Sahasatara capsule orally 3 times a day before meal
for 7 days; Group 2, each subject was given one 25-mg diclofenac capsule orally 3 times a day
after meal for 7 days. The levels of pain as determined by patients using the Visual Analog Scale
on days 0 and 7 were compared within and between groups before and after the treatment. It was
found that the levels of pain on day 7 were significantly lower than the pre-treatment levels in
both groups, while the levels of pain either on day 0 or day 7 were not significantly different
between the two treatment groups. The results showed that the muscle pain-relieving effect of
Sahasatara at the dose of 1,200 mg/day was comparable to that of diclofenac at the dose of 75 mg/
day for 7 days.
