Abstract
This retrospective study aimed to determine the safety and preliminary outcomes of U-Thong Hospital’s
Acanthus ilicifolius L. and Piper nigrum L. formula in treating patients with atopic dermatitis. The study involved
a review of the medical records of patients with atopic dermatitis diagnosed by a modern physician and the patients
had received 2 300-mg capsules of A. ilicifolius and P. nigrum formula, before meals 3 times a day, continuously
for at least 4 weeks, during 2012–2017 at U-Thong Hospital, Suphan Buri province. The research instrument was
the EASI Score Assessment Form. Data were collected and then analyzed using descriptive statistics. Of all 78
patients who had received the treatment for at least 4 weeks, 25.64% were aged 51–60 years, 35.90% were male.
Among those in Group 1, having received only medicinal A. ilicifolius and P. nigrum formula, 70% had improved
symptoms, compared with 76% improvements in Group 2 patients who had received the A. ilicifolius and P. nigrum
formula plus modern medications. Thus, the effects after the treatments with the herbal formula only and with
herbal plus modern medicines were not different; and there were no adverse reactions in the herbal only treatment
group.
