Rationale : Ocimum sanctum L. (°–‡æ√“) has been found to exert lipid-lowering action in both normal and
diabetic animals. OS leaves were rich of oil. It is not known whether the oil contained in OS leaves contribute
to lipid-lowering effect in hyperlipidemic state.
Objective : The present study was conducted to elucidate the lipidemic action of OS leaf oil in rats fed
with high fat diet. Liver and cardiac functions were also evaluated.
Methodology : The oil contained in OS leaves was extracted by hexane. Four groups of male Wistar rats
were used including normal control group, high fat fed-diet (HF) group, HF group treated with OS leaf oil, and
HF group treated with reference drug simvastatin. Rats were fed with 2% cholesterol and 6% lard supplemented
in diet for 7 week. During the last 3 weeks, rats were treated with OS leaf oil.
Results : The results showed that OS leaf oil depressed high serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride
and LDL-C whereas no significant effect on HDL-C was observed in HF fed-diet rats. OS leaf oil suppressed
high levels of liver cholesterol and triglyceride whereas no significant changes of both lipids in feces were
obtained. OS leaf oil also suppressed high levels of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase MB
subunit (CK-MB) but no significant effects on levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate ami-
notransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
Conclusion : Treatment of OS leaf oil during the last 3 weeks of HF feeding decreased high serum lipid
profile except HDL-C and expressed cardioprotective action. The anti-hyperlipidemic action of OS leaf oil was
primary due to the suppression of liver lipid synthesis.
