Survey of Factors Affecting Herbal Medicine Consumption Behavior among
People in Sai Noi District, Nonthaburi Province

Abstract

This research aimed to identify factors affecting herbal medicine consumption behaviours among the
people residing in Nonthaburiûs Sai Noi district. The study was conducted in a sample of 357 residents in the
district who had ever used herbal medicine. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire,
which had been edited by specialists and had content validity and Cronbach reliability coefficients of 0.88 and
0.929 respectively, between August and November 2016. The results showed a high level of herbal medicine
consumption among the respondents. Factors affecting herbal drug use included supporting factors (health
personnelûs advice on herbal remedies) and contributing factors or sources of herbal medicines (modern
drugstores, hospitals and local or folk healers), from which herbal drugs could be conveniently purchased.
Such factors were significantly associated with peopleûs herbal drug use behaviours (p ≤ 0.05). Based on this
study, the results can be adopted as a policy to promote herbal drug use and raise peopleûs awareness about
herbal remedies for basic medical treatment.
